E-waste Management

Electronic waste or e-waste describes discarded electrical or electronic devices. Used electronics that are destined for refurbishment, reuse, resale, salvage recycling through material recovery, or disposal are also considered e-waste. The informal processing of e-waste in developing countries can lead to adverse human health effects and environmental pollution. In India, the Rules related to E-waste Management were introduced in 2011 and later revised in 2016 which is currently followed.

The E-waste management rules 2016 instructs the Producers to engage in Extended Producer Responsibility. Thus PRO’s like Rekart have stepped up to ensure ethical and safe disposal of E-waste.

Producers under E-waste 2016 Rules

Producer means any person who is involved in sales of E-waste irrespective of the selling technique used such as dealer, retailer, e-retailer, etc.

  • Manufactures and offers to sell electrical and electronic equipment and their components or consumables or parts or spares under its own brand
  • Offers to sell under its own brand, assembled electrical and electronic equipment and their components or consumables or parts or spares produced by other manufacturers or suppliers
  • Offers to sell imported electrical and electronic equipment and their components or consumables or parts or spares

About E-Waste EPR

Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is the responsibility of every producer of Electrical and Electronic Equipment (EEE). This is in order to channelize e-waste to an authorised dismantler / recycler to ensure proper handling and disposal of such waste.

Extended Producer Responsibility may comprise of implementation of take back system, setting up of collection centres or both of these. Along with having agreed arrangements with authorised dismantlers or recyclers either individually or collectively through a Producer Responsibility Organisation (PRO).

As per E-Waste (Management) Rules, 2016. EPR authorisation is has been made mandatory to all and has to be obtained by all the producers including importers, e-retailers/on-line sellers/e-bay etc. of EEE

Role & Responsibilities of PRO

Producer Responsibility Organization is a professional organization authorized or financed either collectively or individually by Producers, PRO’s take the responsibility for collection and channelization of e-waste generated from the ‘end-of-life’ of Producers products to ensure environmentally sound management of such E-waste.

A PRO can assist a producer or producers in achieving collection targets, setting up of collection centers/ points/ implementing take back, carrying awareness programmes etc.)

PRO shall have an agreement with producer(s) outlining the role and responsibility of PRO for managing EPR.
